This past weekend showcased the last Open Series events before Journey into Nyx and with no tournaments this weekend thanks to the prerelease, Born of the Gods Standard basically came to an end. The Top 8 of the Standard Open at #SCGDET represented a solved format as four copies of Mono-Black Devotion, two copies of U/W Control, and one copy of G/R Monsters reached the elimination rounds – all stalwarts of the format for the past couple months.
The only standout in the Top 8 was a Junk Midrange list, popularized by Reid Duke’s showing in the Charlotte Invitational from the end of March. In the end, Simon Stahl piloted U/W Control to the victory, defeating previous June 2012 Indianapolis Invitational winner Lauren Nolen in the finals.
The Legacy Open was filled with Delver archetypes, as two copies of RUG Delver, one BUG Delver, and one 4-color Delver (almost identical to the list Eric Rill used to win the Milwaukee Legacy Open two weeks ago) lived on after eight rounds of Swiss on Easter Sunday. RUG Delver won it all in the hands of Morgan Mclaughlin, who defeated Kevin Gerhart and Shardless BUG in the finals. Storm, BUG Control, and Maverick also made appearances in the Top 8.
Standard will soon be introduced to 165 new cards as players get their hands on Journey into Nyx this weekend and will be able to battle with them in Cincinnati as the Open Series hits the Queen City on May 3-4.
