Fight for you Rites: Finals, David Bauer vs. Jon Goss
“So honestly, how has Undying+Evil been?”
“It’s ridiculous.”
David and Jon are here on the backs of Junk decks of different types, one midrange and one reanimator. Which green, white, and black deck will take the trophy?
Game 1
Arbor+Elf off of Overgrown+Tomb is how David led things off, and Jon followed suit, shocking himself to play Avacyn’s Pilgrim. Sunpetal+Grove and Arbor+Elf tapped to cast Lotleth+Troll, while Jon’s allowed him to drop Loxodon+Smiter. David played an Overgrown+Tomb tapped and passed for turn three, while Jon furthered his board position with Lingering Souls… but no third land. Grisly+Salvage revealed four lands and Centaur+Healer, and David selected Temple+Garden over Gavony+Township.
Jon's getting in on the Spirit!
Overgrown+Tomb untapped (with a discard to Lotleth+Troll) let David cast Unburial+Rites on Angel+of+Serenity, wiping Jon’s board of all but one token (and also rebuying Centaur+Healer) before Troll came in for three. Still unable to find land, Jon just passed. David discarded a second Angel+of+Serenity to Lotleth+Troll, threatening to flash back Unburial+Rites. But before he could, Jon chuckled and said, “you got it.”
David 1, Jon 0.
“So you from around here?” queried Jon.
“Well, I was born and raised in Miami but I’m living in New York for like a year.”
“So… not at all?”
Game 2
Jon was on the play and started things off by shocking himself to cast Deathrite+Shaman. David played Overgrown+Tomb tapped. Deathrite attacked for one, then Jon played another tapped land. Mulch from David revealed five cards… wait a second… that should be four.
Oops.
David is prepared for St. Patty's Day... with an Unburial party!
The table judge ruled David should shuffle in the card revealed fifth and the Mulch resolved, revealing no lands and no more harm done. Jon played a third land, Gavony+Township, and passed. Lotleth+Troll joined the party, as did David’s third land, and at end of turn Jon used Tragic+Slip to attempt to knock off Troll but it was to no avail (discard Craterhoof+Behemoth). Deathrite removed Mulch to eat away at David’s life total.
Jon the untapped and Abrupt+Decay took out Lotleth+Troll. Deathrite swung for one and David fell to 16 (with Jon still on 18). David cast Mulch in four lands this time.
“Pretty good Mulch!”
“Last time whiffed, so I guess it evens out.”
Jon drew a land and passed, as did David, but Jon cast Restoration+Angel in the end step. Restoration+Angel attacked, but David’s came in to surprise block. Tragic+Slip was met by Tragic+Slip, so 2/3 fliers bounced off each other. Avacyn’s Pilgrim joined in as well for Jon, and he passed. David attacked for three and then after combat made four tokens with Lingering+Souls, giving Jon no opportunity to remove the sorcery with Shaman. He did however remove Angel+of+Serenity before getting to untap.
Restoration+Angel was chump blocked by a token on Jon’s turn, then he passed. David’s air force swung in for six, dropping Jon to 11. After combat, David played Angel+of+Serenity from his hand and it resolved. David selected all three of Jon’s creatures as targets, to which Jon removed Behemoth before trigger resolved. Jon untapped and cast Obzedat%2C+Ghost+Council to put life totals to 13-15, but David flashed Gavony+Township from hand to lock up the win.
David 2, Jon 0.
