StarCityGames.com congratulates Tom “The Boss” Ross for winning back-to-back Invitationals!

Ross, a writer for StarCityGames.com, has dominated the 2014 Invitationals, making the Top 8 in all three this year. After winning the Invitational in Columbus in June and putting his likeness on a StarCityGames.com poison counter, he brought similar decks to the New Jersey Invitational with Mono-Red for Standard (supplemented with Magic 2015 Core Set standout Goblin Rabblemaster) and U/G Infect for Legacy.

The most aggro-leaning player in an impressive Top 8, Ross made quick work of his foes, losing only two games total in three best-of-five matches. In the quarterfinals he swept Jared Boettcher, reigning Rookie of the Year, by outracing Boettcher’s Sneak and Show combo deck.

After winning his semifinals match against Magic Online grinder Devon O’Donnell 3-1, he faced a formidable foe in the finals: Reid Duke, former Invitational champion and 2013 World Championship runner-up. Though Duke took the first game of the finals, Ross claimed the next three games to win the title, ending Game 4 with a flourish: a single Inkmoth Nexus, powered up by Invigorate and Berserk, dealt Duke a lethal ten poison in one attack.
