The StarCityGames.com Open Series hit Worcester, MA this weekend and two multiple Open Series winners added an extra trophy to their mantles on Sunday.
Gerard Fabiano struck first, winning the Standard Open Sunday morning by besting a Top 4 including Reid Duke, Jared Boettcher, and Mike Sigrist. The four players had 22 Open Series Top 8s combined, and the semifinals pitted Fabiano against Grand Prix Washington DC winner Sigrist and Duke against Boettcher in a rematch of their quarterfinal matchup from the Season Two Invitational in Columbus, OH.
Fabiano piloted his unique take on Esper Control past Sigrist to play Duke in the finals, where Fabiano took the match 2-0 and denied Duke his seventh win on the StarCItyGames.com Open Series and a record sixth Open title. The victory was Fabiano’s third, with his previous two wins coming in New Jersey in 2013 and in Worcester in 2013 as part of a team sealed win with friends Erik Smith and Curtis Sheu.
In the evening, Dan Jordan made his return to the Open Series a notable one by winning the Legacy Open with U/W/R Delver for his fourth title. The poker player defeated 2013 New Jersey Invitational winner Erik Smith in the quarters and 13-year-old Burn player Charlie Mitchell in the semis before taking down the U/W/R mirror in the finals against Levi Teitz. Jordan’s previous wins came in Charlotte of 2010 and the Boston Opens from 2010 and 2011.
