StarCityGames.com is proud to congratulate Magic Hall of Famer and StarCityGames.com Premium side author Patrick Chapin on winning Pro Tour Journey into Nyx this past weekend in Atlanta!
The Innovator strayed from the pack and his team to play a Junk Midrange Theros block constructed deck and piloted it all the way to his first Pro Tour victory. Chapin earned the No. 1 seed in the Top 8 by dismantling the Swiss portion of the event with a record of 5-1 in Theros block draft and 8-1-1 in block constructed. Pro Tour Journey into Nyx marked Chapin’s fifth Pro Tour Top 8 and the win qualifies him for the illustrious World Championships.
In a sea of BUG Control and R/G decks packing Elspeth, Sun’s Champion, two Junk Midrange decks met in the finals. While the BUG decks played by the rest of the ChannelFireball Pantheon team opted to pass on the white planeswalker and answer it instead, Chapin went with a Junk Midrange build that could pressure opponents early with Fleecemane Lion, but also end games with the Sun’s Champion. Chapin topped South Korea’s Nam Sung Wook, who was playing a Junk Constellation build, in the finals, 3-1.
Chapin’s path to the finals involved defeating two huge names in Magic: the Gathering – one a blast from the past, the other being the No. 13 player in the world. First, Chapin took down fellow Pantheon teammate and two-time World Championships Top 8er Jamie Parke in the quarterfinals. He followed that by beating reigning Player of the Year and four-time Pro Tour Top 8er Josh Utter-Leyton in the semifinals.
Chapin, author of notable e-Books “Next Level Magic” and “Next Level Deckbuilding,”capped his career that spans back to the start of the game and includes Pro Tour Top 8s in three different decades by finally capturing the elusive Pro Tour champion trophy.
Look out for Chapin’s Pro Tour winning tournament report coming soon to the Premium side of StarCityGames.com!
