The StarCityGames.com Open Series in Somerset, New Jersey took place last weekend, and as it was the very first Standard Open with Dragon's Maze legal and also our very first Team Sealed Open there's a good amount to get to. So let's dive right in!
On Saturday the influx of Dragon's Maze's 166 cards rippled throughout the tournament. And while many cards from the new set impacted the format in new and exciting ways, it was an old standby that won #SCGNJ: Reanimator.
StarCityGames.com Versus video series star and Select writer Chris VanMeter defeated Open end-bosses Max Tietze, William Eads, and Team SCG's Owen Turtenwald on his way to the title with Junk Reanimator. The Unburial Rites and Angel of Serenity-centric deck picked up a few toys from #MTGDGM, including Sam Black's preview card Sin Collector and everyone's favorite Expecto Patronum Voice of Resurgence.
The big takewaya from the weekend: the more things change, the more things stay the same. Three Reanimator, three Jund, UWR Flash, and Bant Hexproof made the top 8, while new contenders like Bant Flash were left on the outside looking in. There's a ton to be learned from the first week of new Standard, so take a gander!

On Sunday, StarCityGames.com welcomed 154 teams to the very first SCG Team Sealed Open. After the Sealed portion was over two teams remained, and what teams they were: The Team SCG Juggernaut of Owen Turtenwald, Reid Duke, and William 'Huey' Jensen faced off against GP Charlotte champion Frank Skarren's team that also included potential Rookie of the Year Joe Demestrio and Alec Nezin.
In an epic nine-game set that came down to the final game of the final match, the potential Hall of Famer 'Baby Huey' defeated the potential Rookie of the Year candidate Joe Demastrio to win it for #TeamSCG! What a finish!
We were not only extremely entertained but we also learned a lot about #MTGRTR block Sealed from the very first Team Sealed Open. Take a look back at the coverage to see more!
