This past weekend had some noteworthy results, including The StarCityGames.com Open Series in Seattle, a full slate of World Magic Cup Qualifiers from around the globe, plus Monday saw the release of the full #MTGDGM spoiler and a new Banned and Restricted updates, so let's dive right in!
The StarCityGames.com Open Series in Seattle took center stage all weekend long, with champions Michael Nixon and Bryan Eleyet emerging from the large Pacific Northwest fields. Michael used the power of the dark side, taking the enemy of the format Junk Reanimator to the top slot. Meanwhile, Bryan took one of Legacy's most wanted Show and Tell and put a classic spin on the Urza's Saga rare, taking M12's Hive Mind to its first Open win in over a year.
One great story from this past weekend is the stellar finishes from StarCityGames.com's new Online Content Coordinator, Cedric Phillips. Cedric posted a third place finish in Standard with an innovative Jund Aggro list, then followed it up with a heartbreaking 9th in the Legacy portion with Goblins. Also, be sure to check out David Doberne's 2nd place Dark Maverick list from the Legacy Open. Knight of the Reliquary and Deathrite Shaman, side by side!
This tournament was packed to the gills with great coverage, not to mention some quality time in the booth on @SCGLive with Gavin Verhey that you surely don't want to miss. So check out all of the coverage from #SCGSEA!
Meanwhile on the other coast, #WMCQDC presented by StarCityGames.com took place and the top 8 was stacked with big names like Reid Duke, Ben Friedman, and Kenny Mayer. But in the end it was Joe Spanier and his Bant Control deck, featuring Prime Speaker Zegana and Sphinx's Revelation side by side, that took down the tournament. Joe's win means he will be representing the United States at the #MTGWMC with the winner of the first US WMCQ in Oakland, Jason Gulevich, as well as the yet-to-be-determined Team Captain and the winner of the third WMCQ in Chicago, both to be determined soon.
Around the world, results started to pour in of players winning their home country's WMCQs. Puerto Rico's Jorge Iramain got onto his second straight WMC team, and Magic writer Carrie Oliver secured her second straight spot as well for Team England.
But for now let's focus on the United States, and our newest representative, Joe Spanier!
But the big news surely came on Monday, with the release of the full Dragon's Maze spoiler! Not to be underestimated as well is the announcement that Second Sunrise is banned in Modern, Regrowth is unrestricted in Vintage.
