Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 18 points made Day 2, meaning 141 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Modern Open at #SCGDFW. Modern said goodbye to Hogaak and Faithless+Looting this week and hello to Stoneforge+Mystic, leading to a much different looking format than the past couple months. While concern over Stoneforge+Mystic taking over the format was high, none of the top six decks on Day 2 opted for the powerful two-drop.
Burn surged to the top with 21 copies, followed closely by Whirza variants (ranging from three-color to five-color builds) at 17. Big mana decks took the next two slots as Mono-Green Tron clocked in at 15 pilots and TitanShift with 10. Modern stalwarts, Jund and Humans came up next with eight and seven copies, respectively. Azorius Control, the first deck on the list with Stoneforge+Mystic, had six players while Grixis Death’s Shadow, Mono-Red Prowess, Infect, Amulet Titan, and Bant Stoneblade all had four copies. Bant Stoneblade marking the other most-played deck with the Kor Artificer.
