Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 21 points made Day 2, meaning 90 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Modern Open at #SCGINDY. In the last Modern Open before the unbannings of Bloodbraid+Elf and Jace, the Mind Sculptor, the meta has adjusted to the results of Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan ad Grand Prix Toronto. Not only is Death’s Shadow at an all-time low, but decks like U/W Control and Mardu Pyromancer lead the field with eight and six copies, respectively. U/W Control was quite popular amongst the pro players while Gerry Thompson’s runner-up finish at the Pro Tour put Mardu Pyromancer on the map.
Also at six copies on Day 2, Humans, Burn, and Eldrazi Tron proved they weren’t going anywhere. Affinity had five pilots on the second day of competition, a spot ahead of both G/B and G/R Tron. Jeskai Control, Scapeshift, Abzan, and B/R Hollow+One all put up decent numbers along with the G/x Tron builds. Grixis Death’s Shadow fell all the way to just three copies with two players on Four-Color and one player on the Five-Color variants.
Combo decks like Elves, U/R Gifts Storm, and Ad+Nauseam joined G/W Company and W/B Eldrazi Taxes at two copies each. One-of strategies include: Bridge Vine, Four-Color Saheeli, Amulet Titan, and Ironworks Combo among others.
