Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 21 points made Day 2, meaning 67 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Modern Open at #SCGCIN. Grixis Death’s Shadow has taken back the top spot in the metagame, but a surprise deck has just as many copies in Day 2. Counters Company, the Collected+Company combo deck combining Devoted+Druid and Vizier+of+Remedies alongside Duskwatch+Recruiter and Walking+Ballista, had seven pilots to go along with Grixis Death’s Shadow.
U/R Gifts Storm and Elves, two recent risers in the format, each had four copies reach the second day of competition, but they are joined by Infect, a deck that had almost disappeared after the banning of Gitaxian+Probe. At three copies each, Five-Color Death’s Shadow, Scapeshift, Affinity, Burn, Eldrazi Tron, Burn, and B/W Eldrazi Taxes make up the middle chunk of the field. The Five-Color build of Death’s Shadow, championed by Clay Spicklemire and friends, takes the best of Jund and Grixis into one deck, using white cards like Lingering+Souls and Ranger of Eos from the sideboard.
Abzan, Jeskai Control, and G/B Tron make up the decks with two copies, including one of the two 9-0 players on Day 1 on G/B Tron. Unique one-ofs on the second day include: Ad Nausea, U/G Merfolk, G/R Ponza, and Humans.
