All players with 18 points made Day 2, meaning 128 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Modern Open at #SCGCHAR. Eldrazi Tron and Affinity are the top two decks for the second straight Modern Open on the SCG Tour®. Eldrazi Tron with 15 pilots and Affinity with 13 are the two decks making up more than 10 percent of the Day-2 field, followed by a surprising third-place deck, Jeskai Control. The three-color control deck grew in popularity after the last Modern Open’s finals showcased two builds of Jeskai Control, with Harlan Firer taking home the trophy.
Burn is right behind Jeskai with nine copies, showing that no matter how the format shifts, Lava+Spike is still a good option. U/R Gifts Storm clocked in with seven pilots while Grixis Death’s Shadow, recently the most dominant deck in the format, only had six players opting for the powerful archetype. Midrange shows up next with Jund and Abzan with six and five copies, respectively.
At four copies, Elves and G/R Ponza follow the midrange decks. The land destruction deck stands out in a field where many of the top strategies include big-mana decks. Scapeshift, 8-Rack, Counters Company, and Ad+Nauseam all have three representatives on the second day of competition. Decks popping up with one or two pilots include: U/R Breach, Bant Spirits, Zoo, Four-Color Saheeli, Ironworks Combo, and Mardu Death’s Shadow.
