Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 18 points made Day 2, meaning 149 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Modern Open at #SCGKY. For the first time, Eldrazi Tron has taken the spot in the Day 2 metagame breakdown of a Modern Open. Popularized by Open wins from Todd Stevens and Dan Musser, Eldrazi Tron clocked in with 17 copies, leading Affinity – the No. 2 deck – by four players on Day 2. Grixis Death’s Shadow, the former most-played deck in the meta, tied with Elves in third at 11 copies each.
After the decks with double-digit representation, Burn leads the pack of decks in the middle with eight players sleeving up Lava+Spike. At seven copies each, U/R Gifts Storm (the winning deck from the last Modern Open) and Jeskai Control follow, with U/W Control at six. Scapeshift and Ad+Nauseam had five pilots on the second day of competition. Midrange decks of all flavors come after the two combo decks, including Jund, Counters Company, Death and Taxes, and Abzan.
Notable decks at two copies each include: Dredge, Merfolk, Five-Color Death’s Shadow, Living+End, and Infect. Rogue strategies with one pilot include: Lantern Control, Goblins, G/R Ponza, 8-Rack, Restore+Balance, and Amulet Titan.
