Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 21 points made Day 2, meaning 80 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Modern Open at #SCGNY. Affinity has bounced back to the top of the Modern metagame, landing 11 players into Day 2. The hyper-aggressive deck preys on Grixis Death’s Shadow, the No. 2 deck, with eight pilots on the second day of competition. After the top two decks, the field gets closer in numbers, as Eldrazi Tron and Scapeshift tie for the third most played deck on Day 2. Some of the Scapeshift decks have added Hour+of+Promise, taking advantage of a five-mana “Primeval Titan” trigger to give the deck more consistency.
Burn clocks in with five copies, while U/R Gifts Storm, Jeskai Control, Merfolk, and Abzan all had four players reach Day 2. Merfolk is the surprise standout of the group, especially after the deck failed to put a single player into Day 2 at the Charlotte Modern Open and the Modern section of the Team Constructed Open in Atlanta. Counters Company had three copies, with one of the builds opting for Bant and Retreat+to+Coralhelm.
Decks with two representatives include: Madcap Moon, Living+End, Dredge, G/B Tron, Death and Taxes, U/W Control, and G/W Company – the deck Hollow+One and discard outlets, Slivers, Amulet Titan, U/W Thopter+Foundry, Enduring+Ideal, and B/W Smallpox in the hands of Tom Ross.
