Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 21 points made Day 2, meaning 66 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Modern Open at #SCGCHAR. Death’s Shadow is the deck to beat in Modern, and the consensus build of the archetype is Grixis. As the most played deck on Day 2, Grixis Death’s Shadow took 13 of the 66 spots on the second day of competition, and was the only build of Death’s Shadow to make Day 2.
The fall from No. 1 to No. 2 is long, with Dredge taking the second spot with five pilots, including Ross Merriam and Ben Friedman. At four copies each, Abzan and Jeskai Control clock in, each having favorable matchups against Death’s Shadow – packing plenty of ways to deal with Death’s Shadow and large Delve threats.
Counters Company, Burn, Affinity, Eldrazi Tron, Abzan Traverse, and U/R Gifts Storm all have three pilots on Day 2, making up the middle of the metagame. At two copies each, W/R Prison, B/W Eldrazi, G/W Tron, and old-school traditional Jund show up. One-of strategies making Day 2 include: Skred Red, 8-Rack, Humans Company, Living+End, and Tezzeret Control.
